We each have our ideas and beliefs about existence – how the world came to be, what happens to us when we die, what our purpose is during the course of our lives, etc. No matter what you believe, though, it’s hard to argue with the astonishing reality that YOU, reading this right now, exist. Here are some things to think about:
- One sperm out of 300 million released during sex fertilizes an egg. That sperm has its own combination of genes which is different from all the other sperm.
- a woman is born with 1 million eggs, has 300,000 by puberty and of those, only 300-400 are released during ovulation over the course of a woman’s life.
- the timing of your parents’ moment of passion determined which sperm and which egg would come together to create the unique creature that is you.
- repeat that process for your grandparents, great grandparents, great-great grandparents, great-great-great grandparents back in time all the way to the beginning of the world. All of those factors had to happen exactly as they did in order for you to be born.
If you believe in God, it is clear to see that you were meant to be. If you don’t believe in God, it is still clear to see that the probability of your existence is ridiculously small.
So, what does that mean exactly? In my opinion, it means that living is an extremely unique experience and that your existence is astonishing, magnificent, and (dare I say it?) miraculous. So, for just a second, let go of all your mistakes, griefs, worries, to-do lists, and self-doubts and just bask in the amazing reality that YOU got a place in this world – tragic, corrupt, beautiful and wonderful as it may be. I’m glad to be here and I’m glad you are too. It’s a privilege to walk through it together.
